Ye Olde Backyard

4/6/2006 – 1:30 pm

The nice weather is really here now. For the last couple of weeks I’ve been putting all my spare time in the yard, instead of on the computer. Its a nice change.

Yesterday I fertilized the lawn with some LadyBug orgainic fertilizer. I’ve really been wanting to go organic, but just haven’t. So now I have. It seems to be really good stuff and I don’t have to worry about the boy helping me with it and it being harmful to him. As a matter of fact, he sat in the spreader while I pushed it around the yard :) Another good thing about it is that it want burn the grass, incase we miss out on the rain again this week.

I’ve also mulched most of the flower beds this year. I have a couple left. I didn’t mulch last year, mainly because I just haven’t been a fan of mulch. But after last years heat and the ongoing drought I know its a good idea. It really keeps the mositure in. I’m using native Texas ceder and I like it.

The garden is looking pretty good so far. I’ve only lost a couple of tomato plants, mainly due to bad transplanting and small feet.  Like last year I have a ton of different plants out. All different than the ones from last year. I will find some that can do well in North Texas, but it could take some times. Plenty of pepper plants also. New to our little garden this year is Strawberries, which are really doing well and I should have planted more. Also new are onions, which are coming alon nicely.

It really takes a long time to get a picture perfect landscape unless you have the cash to have somebody come and do it all at once for you. But now that we are 2 years in this house, we should have our best yard ever. I got tons of different things coming up and have almost filled all the avilable room. I just do a little bit every day or so. I picked up some stuff to put in over the weekend today.

I really wanted some lavender and was able to find several different ones. So this weekend I’m putting in Provence, Goodwin Creek, Munstead, Spanish and French lavender. Each has its own uniquie properties. I hope to use it in cooking and other things. I’ve got some Golden Sage also. Its good lots of good uses as well. Both lavender and sage are drought tolerant and should do well. I picked up a Swan River daisy also. Its a annual (which I try to stay away from) and it doesn’t really give us anything usable, but Its pretty and thats enough.

  2. Just because it says ORGANIC, does not mean it is any safer than other methods!

  3. Hey, I saw a cool thing the other day. It’s a birdhouse kit that has a web cam built into it. The idea is to put it in your backyard and watch the circle of life…bird style. Looks like a great home/outdoor/high tech project.
