Gallery – Not Really
8/8/2002 – 11:59 pmI’ve had Gallery up and running for several days now. The main thing I wanted to be able todo was make it faster to upload images to my site, and be able todo it on the road with out any special software. Gallery is really great, as long as you host your own site or don’t have many pictures. I’ve spent several hours moving images over to it. Once I neard the 2000 picture mark It bombed out. After consulting the mail list the answer was to alocate more memory to php through the php.ini file, well this isn’t gonna happen on a hosted site. So I’m SOL. I’ve got a few options now. I can create a separate gallery and have a new one and an old one or break them into different themes like family stuff and general stuff. I could try to find something different, but that’s how I ended up here. Supposedly the next version will use mySQL which will eliminate this problem. But I’m not sure its even at a point to beta test. I could probably hack the current version to mySQL, but what would the point of that be if there is going to be a new version at the end of the year. Choices , choices I think I can go with setting up multiple copies, then when the new version is out import all the copies into it. I really hate this, but I’m so far in I can’t stop now.

Aw man, I didn’t realize that there was a limit to the number of images you could post before having memory problems. Now I feel bad for recommending it!

Oh thats no problem. They know its an issue, but the way its reading everything from a flat file they know that it needs tons of memory. I think that going with database back end will fix all of that. I’ll just run 2 for the time being it don’t think it will be that big a deal for a while. Its still the best choice out there right now.
